Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico arrived in Moscow on Friday to attend Victory Day celebrations, declaring his intent to pursue diplomatic dialogue despite his status as an EU “black sheep.”
Diplomatic Mission in Moscow
Arriving in Moscow on Friday, May 8, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico laid flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and expressed his desire to honor the Red Army soldiers who liberated Slovakia. Fico stated that he values dialogue over harsh rhetoric, seeking normal, friendly, and standard relations between the Russian Federation and the Slovak Republic.
Opposition to EU Consensus
Describing himself as a “black sheep” within the European Union, Fico declared his opposition to the “only prevailing view” currently held by many European leaders. He explained that he frequently expresses opinions that do not correspond to the singular political view that he believes should be represented.
Calls for Peace and Dialogue
Addressing the conflict in Ukraine, Fico suggested that the “Russian-Ukrainian history” is approaching its end. He emphasized that negotiations at a table are far more sensible than continued combat and expressed strong support for all forms of ceasefire.
Slovak Deputy Foreign Minister Rastislav Chovanec noted that Fico may be carrying a message from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky following their discussion in Yerevan earlier this week.
Airspace Restrictions and Travel
Due to Baltic states closing their airspace, the Slovak aircraft took a circuitous route to Moscow, flying through the Czech Republic, Germany, and Scandinavian countries.
