Final Verdict Delivered in 2019 Szczyrk Gas Explosion Case

More than six years after a devastating gas explosion claimed the lives of eight people, including four children, the Katowice Court of Appeal has finalized the prison sentences for six defendants.

Legal Accountability Established

The Katowice Court of Appeal has upheld prison sentences for six individuals involved in the 2019 gas explosion in Szczyrk. The court confirmed that the tragedy, which resulted in eight fatalities, was caused by the drilling of a gas pipeline beneath a street.

The defendants received sentences ranging from two to six years in prison. The ruling is final and binding, concluding a lengthy judicial process regarding the responsibility for the disaster.

Roles and Convictions

The court examined the roles of six individuals, including Roman D., the head of the company ordering the drilling, and contractors Marcin S. and Józef D. The remaining three defendants, Marcin K., Jakub K., and Ewa K., were employees of a separate firm involved in the gas network expansion.

These three individuals were convicted of irregularities in the expansion process, falsifying documentation, and inciting false testimony. Alongside prison time, all six defendants face 10-year professional bans and are required to pay significant compensation to the victims.

Review of the Court of Appeal

The appellate court largely upheld the May 2024 verdict from the Bielsko-Biała Regional Court. While the court maintained the original assessment of the trial, it introduced minor descriptive corrections to the charges.

The only substantive change was the reduction of Józef D.’s sentence from three years to two. Otherwise, the court dismissed all appeals, deeming the original sentences just and the trial proceedings conducted correctly.
