The Finnish Foreign Ministry has summoned the Russian ambassador after a military aircraft violated Finnish airspace near the Porkkala peninsula on Wednesday, prompting an immediate operational flight by Finnish air forces.
Diplomatic Condemnation of Russian Tactics
The Finnish Foreign Ministry confirmed on Wednesday that it had summoned the Russian ambassador. Officials strongly condemned Russia’s unlawful threats and brutal attacks against Ukrainian civilians, as well as its campaign to pressure European embassy personnel to leave Kyiv.
The Finnish government emphasized that Russia will not dictate Europe’s presence in Ukraine.
Details of the Airspace Incursion
The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 27, near the Porkkala peninsula, approximately 40 kilometers southwest of Helsinki. In response, the Finnish Air Force conducted an “operational flight.”
Authorities have not specified the type of military aircraft involved, noting it could range from a fighter jet, bomber, or transport plane to a helicopter or unmanned aerial vehicle.
Strategic Significance of the Porkkala Area
The area near the Porkkala peninsula is considered security-sensitive, as it houses a Finnish naval base. Historically, a Soviet naval base operated there between 1944 and 1956.
The peninsula is also located near an air corridor frequently used by Russian aircraft traveling between St. Petersburg and the Kaliningrad Oblast.
EU Ministers Debate Negotiation Strategy
Ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Cyprus on Thursday, representatives from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia argued that it is premature to discuss specific candidates for potential negotiations with Russia.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna stated that Putin currently has no interest in dialogue, asserting that any future talks would only occur as a result of increased pressure on the Russian leader.
European Security and the Search for Negotiators
Tsahkna reiterated the position of EU diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas, warning that focusing on who might lead talks with Moscow is a trap set by the Kremlin to divide Europe.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on the candidacy of Finnish President Alexander Stubb, suggesting that his recent rhetoric makes him an unsuitable negotiator.
