A massive explosion followed by a fire injured at least four people in central Utrecht on Thursday afternoon.
Explosion and Fire in City Center
At approximately 15:30 on Thursday (January 15), emergency services received reports of a “huge explosion” on Visscherssteeg in Utrecht. This narrow street is located in the center of the city situated in central Netherlands. Shortly after the explosion, a fire broke out at the scene.
Witnesses Report Shaking Ground
Witnesses reported hearing two loud explosions. Those standing about 200 meters away told journalists about the ground shaking and windows being blown out of buildings. Aerial photos show that several buildings were damaged.
Emergency Response Underway
Multiple emergency services have been deployed for rescue operations, but they do not yet have a full picture of the situation. Many ambulances are on standby, but it remains unknown how many people were actually in the affected buildings. Police are asking passersby if anyone is missing to help determine how many people may still be inside the damaged structures. According to authorities, at least four people were injured. Police warn that the situation is not under control and urge people to stay away from the area.
