Volunteer firefighters from Turze, Poland, lost their heavy-duty Tatra 148 fire engine after it caught fire during a forest rescue operation in Międzyleś, leaving the unit without essential equipment.
Operational Failure and Vehicle Loss
Volunteer firefighters from the OSP Turze unit in Wołomin County are facing a critical equipment shortage. During a forest fire response in Międzyleś, their aging Tatra 148 fire truck suffered a mechanical breakdown, followed by an engine compartment fire that broke out shortly after repairs were attempted on-site.
While no personnel were injured in the incident, the fire caused extensive damage to the engine bay, electrical systems, and bodywork. It remains unclear if the vehicle, which has served the unit for 27 years, can be salvaged or returned to active service.
A Legacy of Service Under Threat
The Tatra 148 was a vital asset for the Turze volunteers, having been manufactured in 1973 and utilized by the unit since 1997. Known for its capability in difficult terrain, it served as a primary heavy rescue vehicle alongside the unit’s other equipment, including an Iveco ML120.
The loss of this truck severely limits the brigade’s operational capacity. With only a light vehicle remaining, the unit currently lacks the water capacity and off-road capability necessary for effective forest firefighting, prompting an urgent appeal for a replacement heavy vehicle.
