A planned rocket launch by German firm Isar Aerospace was halted in Norway after a fishing boat entered the safety zone, delaying Europe’s space ambitions.
Rocket Launch Thwarted by Fishermen
The launch of the Spectrum rocket was postponed Thursday evening after an unauthorized vessel, identified as a fishing boat, entered the safety zone. The crew claimed they were unaware of the restrictions.
The incident occurred at the Andøya spaceport, marking another similar event in the region.
Launch Window and Delay
Isar Aerospace was preparing for a short, approximately 15-minute launch window. The countdown proceeded normally until the final automated sequence, when the vessel was detected.
The launch was immediately suspended for several minutes, resuming only after the area was cleared. However, the delay caused the fuel temperature in the engines to rise, which could not be corrected within the remaining launch window.
Fisherman Claims Unawareness
The fishing boat’s crew stated they were unaware of the navigation ban. A fisherman quoted by the newspaper “VG” explained that the incident was unintentional, citing maneuvering difficulties, fishing gear issues, and challenging sea conditions.
“Spectrum” Program and European Ambitions
The “Spectrum” program is crucial for Europe’s goal of independent access to space, following a previous unsuccessful attempt planned for 2025. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the importance of the Andøya spaceport for achieving European “space sovereignty” during a visit to Norway two weeks ago.
Future Launch Attempts
Isar Aerospace CEO Daniel Metzler announced plans to resume launch attempts as soon as possible, but stressed that safety would not be compromised.
Ongoing Conflict with Local Fishermen
This is the latest incident highlighting a conflict between the developing Andøya Spaceport and local fishermen. Boat owners have long pointed to restrictions on access to fishing grounds due to closures for testing, launches, and military exercises.
In October 2025, a fishing boat disrupted NATO maneuvers, forcing German Air Force aircraft to abort exercises.
