Regional prosecutors in Białystok have charged a former protective service officer in the reopened investigation into a government car accident.
Investigation Reopened
Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Białystok secretly interrogated a former BOR officer on Wednesday, February 25. This represents a separate thread in the investigation into irregularities following a government motorcade accident in Oświęcim.
Prosecutors plan to conclude the investigation in March and intend to charge eight more individuals—seven former and current officers of the State Protection Service and one civilian.
Previous Court Ruling
The incident caused injuries to then-Prime Minister Beata Szydło and passengers in one vehicle. Szydło suffered a broken sternum and ribs. The prosecutor’s office had previously charged Fiat driver Sebastian Kościelnik.
In 2020, an Oświęcim court found Kościelnik guilty of unintentionally causing the accident and conditionally suspended proceedings for one year. This decision was upheld in 2023 by the Kraków District Court.
New Charges
Kościelnik had claimed the initial investigation contained numerous errors that were disregarded by prosecutors. The investigation was reopened in April last year, focusing on exceeding official powers, dereliction of duty, and providing false testimony.
