Former spokesperson for President Andrzej Duda, Krzysztof Łapiński, told Onet that Karol Nawrocki is the only actor on the Polish right, a view that even PiS members find amusing.
Łapiński’s Assessment of Nawrocki
Łapiński explained that “Karol Nawrocki is the only entity on the right that has realistic chances to enact change.” He emphasized Nawrocki’s unique role in driving policy among right‑wing forces.
Party Dynamics During Duda’s Presidency
He noted that when the party quarrels internally, it generally remains a shield behind the president, refraining from criticism or attacks. He added that with Andrzej Duda this approach varied, reflecting shifting alliances within PiS.
Nawrocki’s Current Role
Łapiński pointed out that today Nawrocki is in office while Donald Tusk has restructured his party and holds a strong position as prime minister. This combination constrains the president’s ability to fulfill promises, as PiS lacks a Sejm majority. He recalled that during Duda’s term, the main power centre rested in the government, which sometimes led to tensions.
Internal Tensions Within PiS
Experts have reported on a conflict within PiS, with former party leader Michał Dworczyk describing two visions: a radicalising right that clashes with other right‑wing parties, and a modern conservative party focused on developmental projects for Poland’s future. He criticised the publicised disputes as damaging to the party’s image, reflected in recent polling trends.
