Former Husband of Jill Biden Charged with Wife’s Murder

William Stevenson, ex-husband of First Lady Jill Biden, faces first-degree murder charges in Delaware for killing his wife.

A grand jury in New Castle County, Delaware, has charged William Stevenson with first-degree murder. The case concerns the death of 64-year-old Linda Stevenson, which occurred at the end of December. The indictment was announced on Monday, February 2, and the same day Stevenson was brought before court.

According to local police, the arrest took place at the couple’s home in Oak Hill, west of Wilmington. Officers emphasize that Stevenson was arrested without force and did not resist.

Police Response and Death

On December 28 at approximately 23:16, police received a report about a domestic dispute. After entering the home, rescuers found Linda Stevenson unconscious in the living room. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The body was transported to the state forensic medicine department in Delaware, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause and circumstances of death.

Arrest and Bail

Following the charges, William Stevenson was incarcerated at the Howard Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington. The court set bail at $500,000, but the 77-year-old was unable to pay and remains in custody.

Investigators have not disclosed details about the motive or sequence of events, citing the ongoing investigation.

Background and Connection

William Stevenson was Jill Biden’s first husband. They married in February 1970 when she was 18 and studying at the University of Delaware. Their marriage lasted five years.

In March 1975, Jill Biden met then-Delaware Senator Joe Biden. The divorce from Stevenson was finalized in May of that same year. Both Jill Biden’s office and former President Joe Biden’s office declined to comment to NBC News.
