Former MP and Physician Charged with Corruption and Illegal Possession of Ammunition

A 58-year-old doctor and former member of parliament faces 28 criminal charges, including bribery and document forgery, following a police investigation into his medical conduct in Myszków and Katowice.

Systemic Bribery Allegations

Katowice police, under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office, have investigated the 58-year-old physician, Wojciech P., for his actions between 2022 and 2023. During his tenure as head physician at the hospital in Myszków, he allegedly accepted financial bribes in exchange for prioritizing hospital admissions, extending stays, accelerating surgeries, and providing medical certificates.

Authorities report that the doctor also accepted bribes while working at a private clinic, issuing medical fitness-to-drive certificates without conducting the mandatory health examinations. He allegedly utilized state-funded visits to issue prescriptions and specialist referrals for personal gain.

Evidence Seized and Criminal Charges

Following his arrest in March 2025, police searches of his residences and vehicles uncovered several dozen rounds of illegal ammunition, medical documentation, and tens of thousands of zlotys in cash. Investigators also seized medical files from two healthcare facilities and conducted witness interviews.

Tomasz Ozimek, spokesperson for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Częstochowa, confirmed that the doctor faces 28 charges, including corruption, document forgery, and unauthorized possession of ammunition. One charge involves soliciting another doctor to issue a false medical certificate to excuse a witness from court.

Prosecution Demands Prison Sentence

The prosecutor has requested a sentence of 1.5 years of unconditional imprisonment and a 250,000 PLN fine for the primary suspect. Six other individuals charged with bribery are also awaiting trial, with the prosecution seeking agreed-upon sentences for three of them, including Wojciech P., who has opted to plead guilty.

This is not the first legal trouble for the suspect. He previously received conditional dismissals in cases involving false asset declarations and illegal trade in rhino horns. In his earlier political career, he was expelled from the Civic Platform (PO) in 2007 following his involvement in a corruption scandal concerning land sales on the Hel Peninsula, though the case later concluded with the acquittal of the primary defendants.
