Former Putin Critics Transform Into Supporters

Russian liberal opposition journalist Julia Latynina has undergone a surprising ideological transformation from Putin critic to supporter.

The Once-Fierce Opponent

Several years ago, Julia Latynina would have been considered one of the figures best embodying the Russian opposition. Since the 1990s, Latynina had been a well-known journalist for Russia’s most important liberal media outlets – Echo of Moscow radio and the biweekly “Novaya Gazeta.” Fearlessly like a Valkyrie of Russian democracy, she never shied away from risk, always standing on the front lines in the fight against Putinism.

In 2017, after several attacks and the arson of her car, Latynina decided to emigrate. Since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, she had supported the attacked with all her strength and, obviously, hated Putin.

A Dramatic Shift

The last two points about Latynina are no longer current. And she is not alone in this astonishing transformation.
