Former Ukrainian premier Mykola Azarov was sentenced to 15 years in prison with all assets confiscated by a Kiev court on charges of treason and supporting Russian aggression.
Verdict and Assets Confiscated
The Peczerski District Court in Kiev handed down a 15‑year jail sentence to Mykola Azarov, also ordering the forfeiture of the entirety of his assets.
Charges of Treason and Collaboration
The court found that Azarov committed acts of treason, undermining Ukraine’s territorial integrity and national security, inciting the overthrow of constitutional order, and justifying Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine.
Ukrainian Security Services’ Statement
Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) confirmed that Azarov, while outside Ukraine, actively cooperated with Russian intelligence to conduct subversive operations against the Kremlin; the SBU highlighted his role in spreading anti‑Ukrainian propaganda on Russian TV and social media.
Associate Sentenced Alongside Azarov
A former aide to Azarov was also sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison, with his assets seized, following a separate court ruling.
Background: Escape to Russia
Azarov, who served as prime minister from 2010 to 2014, fled to Russia with Viktor Yanukovych and other Regional Party members following the 2014 Maidan revolution, and has been on Interpol’s international wanted list since 2015.
