Former Żelazków Mayor Dies After Losing Position Over Court Verdict

Sylwiusz Jakubowski, former mayor of Żelazków commune, has died at age 66, having lost his position in 2022 following a court conviction for assaulting a police officer.

Death of the Former Mayor

Sylwiusz Jakubowski, the former mayor of Żelazków commune, has passed away, according to the commune office. Jakubowski died at the age of 66 in the Intensive Care Unit of the Provincial Hospital in Kalisz.

The municipality staff expressed condolences to the family and relatives of the long-serving local official, noting that his work “has been written in the pages of the commune’s history.”

Incidents Involving the Mayor

Sylwiusz Jakubowski lost his position as mayor of Żelazków in 2022 after a decision by the electoral commissioner in Kalisz, citing a court ruling. Jakubowski was held responsible for assaulting a police officer during an Equality March in Kalisz.

It was reported that during the incident, the mayor had 1.9 permille of alcohol in his exhaled breath. Jakubowski did not admit guilt and refused to provide explanations. The court fined him 5,000 Polish złoty and ordered him to pay 3,000 Polish złoty in compensation to the victim, as well as cover court costs.

The man had previously faced court proceedings three times, once for an offense and twice for crimes. He was accused of, among other things, causing a false alarm, driving without a license, a collision, and officiating a wedding while intoxicated. Police had previously taken Jakubowski from his workplace under the influence of alcohol multiple times.
