Ambulance Arson Investigated as Hate Crime
Four ambulances belonging to a Jewish community organization, parked near a synagogue in Golders Green, North London, were set ablaze last night, police reported Monday. The incident is being treated as a hate crime with antisemitic motives.
The ambulances belonged to Hatzola, a non-profit organization providing emergency medical assistance, according to Reuters.
Attack Details and Evidence
Surveillance footage shows three masked men dousing the vehicles with gasoline and setting them on fire. The incident occurred in Golders Green, a neighborhood with a large Jewish population.
Firefighters reported that oxygen tanks in the ambulances ignited, causing explosions and shattering windows in nearby residential buildings.
Community Reaction and Concerns
“The attack on life-saving vehicles parked at a synagogue parking lot is particularly chilling and will shock our community at a time when concerns about antisemitism in Britain are already heightened,” said local councilor Dean Cohen, quoted by the Times of Israel. He added, “It’s time the authorities woke up and did more to tackle this spreading hatred.”
Global Rise in Antisemitic Attacks
There has been an increase in attacks against Jews and Jewish sites worldwide since the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel and the subsequent war in the Gaza Strip.
Similar Incidents and Past Attacks
Mark Gardner, CEO of Community Security Trust, which advises approximately 290,000 British Jews on security matters, noted “an obvious parallel to recent antisemitic arson attacks in Liege, Rotterdam and Amsterdam.”
The most serious antisemitic incident in Britain in 2025 was a terror attack in Manchester, where a British citizen born in Syria drove into pedestrians near a local synagogue and then attacked worshippers with a knife on Yom Kippur. Three people were killed, and the attacker was shot dead by police. The attacker had previously pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.
