France: Resolution Filed for Withdrawal from NATO

French lawmakers from “La France Insoumise” submitted a resolution to exit NATO, citing sovereignty concerns.

Resolution Filed

This week, deputies from the left-wing “La France Insoumise” (LFI) party submitted a resolution to the French National Assembly regarding France’s withdrawal from NATO. They argue the alliance, led by the United States, restricts French sovereignty and prioritizes American interests. LFI vice president Clémence Guetté referenced U.S. intervention in Venezuela, support for genocide in Gaza, and threats against Greenland in her X post about the resolution.

Criticism of the Alliance

The current proposal aligns with LFI’s longstanding critique of NATO. In 2022, the party called for the dissolution of the world’s “integrated military alliance,” arguing it should have ended after the Cold War. LFI representatives have condemned NATO’s expansion and interventions in the Balkans, Afghanistan, and Libya.

Alignment with Interests of Russia

Experts note LFI politicians’ statements often align with non-democratic states like Russia, China, and Syria. Party founder Jean-Luc Mélenchon has echoed Kremlin positions, claiming Russia had the right to annex Crimea and blaming NATO for Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine. LFI also opposes French military support for Ukraine.
