French deputies have tabled a resolution calling for France to leave NATO, citing sovereignty concerns.
Criticism of the alliance
The current proposal to leave NATO is in line with the previous criticism of the alliance by LFI representatives. In 2022, the group argued that it is the only “integrated military alliance in the world” that should be dissolved after the end of the Cold War. Party representatives criticized NATO’s expansion and interventions in the Balkans, Afghanistan and Libya.
Convergence with Kremlin interests
Experts note that many statements by France Unbowed politicians are consistent with the interests of non-democratic countries such as Russia, China and Syria. The party’s founder Jean-Luc Mélenchon has repeatedly spoken in line with the Kremlin’s line. He said, among other things, that Russia had the right to annex Crimea. He also claimed that NATO is to blame for Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. LFI representatives also criticize France’s support for Ukraine. LFI is not the only French group critical of NATO. The National Rally (RN) evaluates the Alliance’s negative activities. In 2022, the leader of this party and presidential candidate Marine Le Pen called for France to leave NATO’s military structures. At the same time, she advocated for the Alliance to approach Russia after the end of the conflict in Ukraine.
