Freezing rain and black ice cause series of accidents and paralyze major roads including A2 highway and Zakopianka road.
Weather Warning Issued for Southern Poland
The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management has warned against freezing rain causing black ice, particularly affecting Subcarpathian, Lesser Poland, Silesian, Opole, and Świętokrzyskie voivodeships. Slippery conditions may also appear in southern districts of Mazowieckie, Łódzkie, Lubelskie, and Lower Silesian voivodeships. The warnings are valid until 18:00.
Multiple Collisions Paralyze A2 Highway
Difficult weather conditions on Wednesday morning caused a collision on the A2 highway between Pruszków and Konotopa interchanges, where a passenger car struck two trucks, creating a multi-kilometer traffic jam. Another collision occurred between Siedlce Zachód and Groszki interchanges, blocking the lane toward Warsaw. GDDKiA reported all national roads are passable.
Snow removal and de-icing vehicles have been deployed over 1,200 times in the past 24 hours, using more than 3,600 tons of salt.
Zakopianka Road Blocked After Accident
The Zakopianka road toward Kraków was completely blocked following an accident in Jawornik near Myślenice, where two passenger cars collided before 8:00 AM. One person was injured, and police have organized detours around the scene.
Hypothermia Claims Lives of 43 People
The police warn that persistently low temperatures pose a deadly threat, especially to homeless individuals, seniors, people living alone, and those under the influence of alcohol. Since November began, 43 people have died from hypothermia. Police conduct daily patrols to assist vulnerable individuals, and citizens are urged to report potentially endangered persons to emergency services at 112.
