From September 30, tourists entering the Tatra National Park (except for Lejowa and Chochołowska Valleys) can collect free hygiene bags to address sanitation issues.
TPN combats fecal pollution in the Tatras
Starting September 30, visitors to the Tatra National Park (excluding Lejowa and Chochołowska Valleys) and the tourist information center at Chałubiński Street 44 can collect free hygiene bags. Initially free, these bags will later be available for a fee. They aim to reduce the common problem of “wild toilets” frequently found in the mountains.
How to use the hygiene bags
According to TPN representatives, “the bags are convenient and safe to use, odorless, and easy to transport later. They help maintain cleanliness on trails and in the Tatra Mountains during emergency situations that can happen to anyone.” Each person should take one bag for longer hikes, while shorter walks should use sanitary facilities outside the park. Usage is simple: tear along the perforations to access the inner bag, toilet paper, and wet wipes. Spread the foil bag on the ground, preferably in a small depression, and place waste, used paper, and wipes inside. Seal the package tightly, place it in the outer bag, and close it with a zipper. “Don’t worry—the special filling inside quickly gels the contents, blocking odors and moisture. The bag can be safely disposed of in a regular mixed waste container, preferably outside the park. It is fully adapted for landfill storage,” reads the TPN statement.
The problem of “wild toilets”
As park authorities note, such bags have long been used in the Tatras, primarily by speleologists and cavers. Now, due to the increasing number of tourists, they are also recommended for general hiking. “Waste pollutes water and soil, and for other visitors, it creates unpleasant encounters with nature in the national park. Abandoned wipes or toilet paper often accompany the waste,” the authorities emphasized. “Let’s focus on nature and together take care of the Tatras,” they added.
