Frost Causes 9 Water Supply Breaks Across 8 Warsaw Districts, Leaving 83 Buildings Without Water

Persistent freezing temperatures in Warsaw have caused 9 water supply failures across 8 districts, leaving 83 buildings without water.

Frost-Related Water Failures Across Warsaw

Continued severe frost in Warsaw has led to multiple water supply failures. On January 18, MPWiK reported 8 emergency shutdowns in 7 districts, affecting a total of 83 addresses. The capital’s temperature dropped to approximately -13°C in the morning, creating conditions that damage underground infrastructure including pipe ruptures and cracks.

The current frost conditions increase the risk of further network failures as the ground remains frozen. MPWiK is accepting failure reports around the clock at the number 994, with outage updates provided as repair statuses and timelines change.

Affected Locations and Repair Timelines

The water supply failures impact multiple districts including Mokotow, Ochota, Targowek, Ursus, Ursynow, Wilanow, and Zoliborz. Specific affected streets include Postępu, Żwirki i Wigury, Mrozowska, Mariana Keniga, Ludwinowska, Muzyczna, Poleczki, Wyczółki, Biedronki, ks. Jerzego Popiełuszki, and Zygmunta Krasińskiego.

Repair timelines vary by location, with most expected to be resolved by January 18 at 15:00, though some on Ludwinowska and Muzyczna streets are not expected to be fixed until 23:00 on the same day. The first failure was reported on January 17 at 20:20 on Postępu Street.

Continued Frost Warning Expected

The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW-PIB) has issued a first-degree warning for “strong frost” effective until January 20 at 10:00, covering the area of Warsaw. Long-term weather forecasts indicate temperatures below 0°C will persist through the end of January, increasing the risk of further network failures.

These prolonged freezing conditions mean the ground will remain frozen for an extended period, continuing to stress the city’s water infrastructure and potentially causing additional failures in the coming days.
