Frosts Persist as New Cold Wave Approaches Poland

Poland braces for renewed Arctic chill, with freezing temperatures, icy conditions, and snowfall expected across the country starting this weekend.

Fog, Freezing Rain, and Black Ice

On Saturday, February 7, Poland lies within a zone of low pressure and humid polar-maritime air from the Atlantic. This brings widespread cloud cover, dense fog, and rain showers locally turning to freezing rain. With temperatures near 0°C and sub-zero ground levels, hazardous black ice is likely nationwide.

Nighttime fog and freezing rain will be particularly intense along a strip from Pomerania through Warmia and Masuria to Podlasie.

Arctic Air Approaches from the North

Further days will bring gradual cooling. An occluded front with cold front characteristics will move in from the north, ushering in Arctic air. Light but persistent snowfall of up to 5 cm is expected in the northeast. Residents there will feel the return of deep winter first.

The IMGW forecasts nighttime temperatures in the northeast could plummet to -20°C early next week.

Weekend Weather Forecast

Saturday will be mostly cloudy with fog. Light drizzle and persistent fog are possible in the south and west. Snow will develop in the north and northeast. Maximum temperatures: -3°C to -1°C in the northeast, 2°C to 4°C in the south.

Sunday remains cloudy almost everywhere. The northeast may see brief clearing but will be coldest, reaching -8°C during the day. Southern temperatures will be 1-2°C.

Strong Nighttime Frosts to Start the Week

Monday, February 9, brings cloudier skies with clearer spells in the east and center. No precipitation is expected, but temperatures remain low: from -9°C in the northeast to around -1°C in the west. Tuesday and Wednesday will see deteriorating conditions with fog, mixed precipitation, and freezing rain possible. Nighttime frost will persist, especially in the northeast.

IMGW Warns: Nighttime Lows Reaching -19°C

According to IMGW forecasts, nighttime temperatures from Sunday to Monday could drop to -19°C in the northeast. Central Poland may see around -11°C, while the southwest will be mildest. Forecasters emphasize coming typical winter conditions, urging drivers and pedestrians to prepare for icy roads, limited visibility, and severe nighttime cold.
