After months of delay, Poland has secured funding for the National Register of Marked Dogs and Cats, with mandatory chipping expected soon.
Background of the KROPiK Initiative
The obligation to mark animals and register them in a state system aims primarily to curb the practice of abandoning pets.
Funding Controversy
In August, the Ministry of Agriculture had indicated that building KROPiK would require additional funding from the state budget. This did not sit well with the Ministry of Finance, which reminded about the European Commission’s excessive deficit procedure against Poland. Consequently, the Standing Committee of the Council of Ministers postponed consideration of the project.
Recent Developments
After more than five months and alarming reports about the situation in animal shelters, work on the National Register of Marked Dogs and Cats is set to accelerate.
Lower Costs for KROPiK
The implementation of KROPiK is expected to have reduced costs compared to initial estimates.
