Funeral Benefit Rises, But Formalities Remain

Since January, funeral benefits in Poland have been paid on new terms, with ZUS increasing the amount to 7,000 zł (by 3,000 zł more than before), though it still falls short of average funeral costs.

Increased Funeral Benefits

Since January, funeral benefits have been paid under new rules. After more than a decade, the benefit has been indexed, and families of the deceased now receive 7,000 zł from ZUS (3,000 zł more than before).

Still Below Average Costs

Despite the significant increase, the amount is still lower than the average cost of a funeral, which according to GUS last year was approximately 10,000 zł.

Not Full Reimbursement

The funeral benefit is not a reimbursement of funeral costs but rather assistance to the family, which still does not cover all expenses related to organizing a funeral.

Regional Cost Differences

Being limited to 7,000 zł is only possible in small towns with very modest family requirements. In large cities, funeral costs reach even 20,000 zł, explains Jerzy Jarosz, owner of the Arka funeral home in Głogów.
