Future of SAFE Program: Coalition Fights for Signature, Opposition for Veto

Coalition and opposition clash over presidential signature for SAFE arms loan program as president’s stance grows critical.

Presidential Stance on SAFE

The longer the public debate on SAFE continues, the stronger the impression that the president is preparing grounds to veto the legislation enabling the program for arms loans. While unofficial sources in the Presidential Chancellery suggest “the signature is on the table” since national security is a priority, the tone of the head of state’s official statements is becoming increasingly critical. Such suggestions are also coming from Law and Justice politicians.

Opposition’s Position on Veto

“Of course I would like the president to do what he has done so far – veto it and show the bill indicating our independent sources of financing for purchases of Polish arms. I think the president won’t have to do much with this, as these mechanisms have been suggested,” says DGP MP Piotr Kaleta from the Sejm’s National Defense Committee.
