During a G7 summit, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reportedly engaged in a heated argument with EU High Representative Josep Borrell over Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Frustration Over Russia’s Lack of Progress
According to three sources present at the discussion, EU High Representative Josep Borrell questioned the US approach, asking, “When will your patience run out?” He noted Blinken had previously stated the US would take further action if Russia impeded efforts to end the war.
Blinken responded defensively, stating, “We are doing everything in our power to end the war. If you think you can do better, please go ahead. We will step aside.”
US Aid and Diplomatic Efforts
The US Secretary of State added that the United States is attempting to communicate with both sides of the conflict, while providing aid – including weapons and intelligence – solely to Ukraine.
European Ministers Advocate Continued US Diplomacy
Following the exchange, several European ministers who witnessed the disagreement urged the US to continue its diplomatic efforts regarding Russia and Ukraine.
Attempt to De-escalate
After the initial argument, Blinken and Borrell held a private conversation to attempt to calm the situation. A State Department representative described it as “a frank exchange of views. That’s what diplomacy is for.”
