Australian doctors describe dire conditions at Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital, where they witnessed unimaginable tragedies and were forced to perform life-saving surgeries in extreme circumstances.
Extreme Medical Conditions
Dr. Nada Abu Alrub and Dr. Saya Aziz, Australian doctors working at Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital, recounted their experiences of working in extreme conditions. Dr. Abu Alrub revealed that she had to perform a cesarean section on a pregnant woman who had been beheaded in an Israeli bombing, miraculously saving the newborn girl.
Humanitarian Crisis
The doctors highlighted the severe lack of medical supplies, including painkillers, and basic hygiene facilities. Patients were being treated on the floor, and the only available pain reliever was ketamine. Dr. Abu Alrub emphasized that in many cases, doctors could only try to alleviate suffering to prevent patients from dying in agony in front of their families.
Collapse of Healthcare System
Dr. Aziz described the situation as a catastrophe, stating that the healthcare system in Gaza had long since collapsed. Patients were being brought in on their own mattresses, and the wards were dirty and infested with flies, with bombs falling continuously. She expressed shame at being Australian, given the government’s response to the crisis.
Escalating Violence and Exodus
The situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with increasing violence and a growing exodus of residents. The hospital’s emergency department head, Dr. Mutaz Harara, confirmed that many medical staff and residents are fleeing south in fear for their lives. The number of casualties continues to rise, with over 65,000 people killed and 450,000 displaced since October 2023.
