German Drivers Fuel Up in Poland Amid Price Disparity

Increased queues of German vehicles are forming at Polish petrol stations in Świnoujście, prompting municipal authorities to manage traffic flow.

Increased Traffic at Świnoujście Petrol Stations

Traffic is heavier than usual at petrol stations in Świnoujście, with the majority of customers driving cars registered in Germany. The highest congestion is on Nowokarsiborska Street, where three petrol stations are located in close proximity, and which is also the main access route to the Świnoujście Tunnel.

Traffic Management by City Guard

Drivers are queuing to refuel, obstructing the roadway, and requiring the city guard to manually direct traffic. If the number of vehicles increases further, they will be diverted to the bypass to ensure smooth traffic flow, according to Wojciech Basałygo of the Świnoujście City Hall.

Fuel Tourism and Price Differences

Authorities are observing what they call “fuel tourism,” driven by lower fuel prices at Polish stations compared to those in Germany. This is resulting in a large influx of drivers from Germany seeking cheaper fuel, Basałygo added.

Nighttime Fuel Transport by Ferry

To prevent potential fuel shortages during the holiday period, the City Hall has requested permission from the Maritime Office to transport fuel via ferry over the Easter weekend. Tanker trucks will be transported on the Karsibór ferry between 11:00 PM and 4:00 AM from April 4th to 6th.

Unique Logistics Due to Tunnel Restrictions

The only route connecting the eastern and western parts of Świnoujście (Wolin and Uznam islands) is through the Świnoujście Tunnel. Consequently, fuel is supplied to Świnoujście solely by ferries, not by road. Hazardous materials are prohibited from entering the tunnel, so tankers are transported by ferries and vehicles, which operate from Monday to Saturday.

Fuel Supply Assured for Easter Weekend

The City Hall assures drivers visiting Świnoujście over the Easter weekend that they should not experience any difficulties refueling their vehicles.

Maximum Fuel Prices Set

As of Friday, the maximum price for 95-octane unleaded petrol, including VAT, was set at 6.19 złoty. The maximum price for 98-octane unleaded petrol, including VAT, is 6.80 złoty per litre, and the maximum price for diesel oil is 7.64 złoty per litre, including VAT.
