German Press Reports Anti‑Ukrainian Propaganda Swells Polish Hostility

Poland now hosts almost a million Ukrainian war refugees; along with earlier arrivals it totals about 1.5 million, ranking the country among the top three hosts for those fleeing Russian aggression.

Attitudes Toward Ukrainians Have Shifted

Unlike the generous openness witnessed three years ago, public mood has shifted markedly, experts say, as Russian disinformation campaigns blame Ukrainians for dragging Poland into conflict. Recent drone attacks and sabotage incidents have led to accusations directed at Ukraine rather than Russia, and the government has struggled to counter false narratives while feeling pressure from critics of aid to Ukraine.

Konfederacja and President Nawrocki Oppose Refugees

According to Grossmann, the party that focuses especially on Ukrainians is Konfederacja, alongside President Karol Nawrocki. Konfederacja alleges that the government of former Prime Minister Donald Tusk prioritizes Ukraine’s interests over Poland’s and warns against mass infiltration by Ukrainians acquiring Polish citizenship, potentially boosting their parliamentary representation.

Growing Hostility Toward Ukrainian Immigrants

The Tusk administration has contributed to rising anti‑Ukrainian sentiment by accepting parliamentary calls to limit refugee benefits. Nawrocki demands even harsher treatment, echoing his “First Poland” slogan. While Poland offered homes, transport, food, and job access to Ukrainians in early 2022, public sympathy fell from 83 % then to 30 % now, with 38 % expressing hostility toward Ukrainian immigrants.

German Journalist Highlights Support and Rising Tension

German journalist Tetiana Kucharenko reports that many Poles continue to support Ukrainians, but vocal opposition has grown louder. She compares current Polish sentiments to those in Britain before Brexit, noting a shift toward increased scrutiny of Ukrainian aid and assistance.
