On November 25, a German defense convoy in Burg, Saxony‑Anhalt, was found to have lost roughly 10,000 pistol rounds, 9,900 training rifle rounds and smoke grenades overnight.
Ammunition Disappeared During Night Stop
A military truck carrying ammunition was parked by a civilian driver on an unsecured lot in Burg, Saxony‑Anhalt, on the night of 25 November. The driver, who should have arranged a secured overnight stop, left the vehicle unattended and went to a hotel. The next day, when personnel responded to the Clausewitz Barracks, they discovered that parts of the cargo were missing.
Defense Ministry Responds
The German Ministry of Defence confirmed the theft and stressed that it is treating the incident “very seriously.” It noted that such ammunition must not fall into improper hands and said the investigation is being carried out jointly with police. Officials are scrutinising the driver’s conduct, as per regulations a similar transport should have two drivers to ensure continuous supervision.
Another Such Incident
Saxony‑Anhalt has experienced a string of similar events in recent months. In August, local police in Bernburg reported the disappearance of 90 ammunition pieces, and weeks later, 180 police rounds vanished from a depot in Eisleben. No link between these cases has yet been confirmed.
