Germany extends border checks for six months, citing migration reorganization, as EU patience wears thin and reviews procedures.
Minister Announces Extension
On Monday, Germany’s Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced to “Bild” the extension of border controls, originally set to end on March 15, by another six months. He stated they are part of Germany’s migration policy reorganization.
Increased Illegal Crossings and Asylum Trends
“Bild” also cites Federal Police data showing nearly 68,000 illegal entry attempts into Germany between September 2024 and December 2025. Of these, 46,000 individuals were turned back directly at or shortly after crossing the border.
In January 2026, 7,600 asylum applications were filed, marking a nearly twofold decrease compared to the same period the previous year.
