Germany Ponders Draft If Volunteers Fall Short

Germany’s ruling coalition is exploring a compulsory enlistment scheme to boost troop numbers from 180,000 to 260,000, a move that could trigger protests among students.

Germany Considering New Draft Rules?

Under the Modernisation Act, Germany’s coalition is debating a compulsory enlistment scheme to increase soldiers from 180,000 to 260,000. The plan mirrors Denmark’s model, activating conscripts only when voluntary numbers fall short.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius projects about 20,000 volunteers next year, 23,000 by 2027 and a gradual rise to 38,000 by 2030. SPD parliamentary leader Matthias Miersch has stressed that the approach must stem from voluntary participation.

Student Protest in Freiburg

According to Tagesschau, students in Freiburg have staged demonstrations against the draft initiative. They claim that decisions affecting the country are imposed on them without their input.

Spokesperson Peter Bannbath said, “We, the young, must shoulder the blame; decisions are made over our heads. It is no wonder many say they do not want to fight for this country.”
