Starting September 1, 2026, a new law will prohibit mobile phones and recording devices in both public and private schools, a measure Prime Minister Tusk describes as a response to a digital addiction crisis.
New Regulations for Polish Schools
The government has adopted a draft amendment to the Law on School Education, which will take effect on September 1, 2026. Education Minister Barbara Nowacka confirmed the ban applies to public and private primary schools, covering smartphones and any devices capable of recording audio or images.
A Response to Digital Addiction
Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized that the move addresses a widespread civilization problem, noting that mobile phone addiction affects the entire population but is particularly damaging to children. He called for mutual understanding and kindness during the legislative process, acknowledging that the policy is a difficult but necessary step for the well-being of youth.
Scope of the Ban and Exemptions
The restriction applies to the entire duration of a student’s time on school premises, including breaks and off-site educational activities. However, exceptions are permitted for health and safety reasons, or when a teacher determines a device is necessary for the educational or caregiving process. The ban does not apply to boarding schools, school trips, or school staff.
Implementation and Public Support
Minister Nowacka noted that over 50 percent of schools have already implemented similar internal rules. She described the bill as part of a broader effort to improve the mental health and digital hygiene of young people. The government expects the President to approve the measure, citing strong support from over 80 percent of the public, as well as parents and teachers.
