President Karol Nawrocki has until Tuesday to decide on the budget bill, with expectations he might send it to the Constitutional Tribunal.
Presidential Decision Timeline
President Karol Nawrocki has until Tuesday to decide on the budget bill. Due to his flight to the World Economic Forum in Davos, it was expected he might announce his decision on Monday. As of this article’s publication, this did not happen, but signals from the Presidential Palace indicate that the head of state is not satisfied with the budget bill. Our sources from the coalition expected it to be sent to the Constitutional Tribunal.
Presidential Concerns Expressed
The President had announced that he would act in such a way “so that the Republic of Poland could function.” However, he did not hide that the bill raises his concerns. “I have many objections to the Polish budget and to the government’s work in the field of public finances. I am very disappointed with the Minister of Finance for neglecting budgetary matters,” he said.
Sharp Criticism from Presidential Aide
Even more sharply, his head of office Zbigniew Bogucki spoke. “A disastrous budget with a gaping deficit. Where President Karol Nawrocki can act, he does everything to protect the interests of Poland and the interests of Poles,” Bogucki wrote on the X service.
Constitutional Limitations and Budget Impact
“But in the case of the budget bill, the constitution does not give the president the right of veto. He cannot refuse to sign it – even if the budget is bad, disastrous and dangerous for the state finances,” Bogucki added. He also noted that “the budget attacks institutions independent of Donald Tusk’s government, taking away their funds and trying to subordinate them.”
