Government spokesperson Adam Szłapka sharply criticized presidential minister Marcin Przydacz’s remarks about the defense program, calling them harmful to Poland’s security.
Przydacz Questions Germany’s Defense Equipment Choices
Head of the Bureau of International Policy for the President of Poland Marcin Przydacz responded to Reuters reports that Germany is considering ordering more American F-35 fighter jets. Przydacz stated the equipment is “good” and “American,” then questioned why Germany would buy American rather than European defense equipment in the context of the SAFE program.
Szłapka’s Sharp Rebuke
Government spokesperson Adam Szłapka immediately criticized Przydacz’s remarks, calling them “nonsense.” Szłapka emphasized Poland can still purchase equipment from allies while noting the SAFE program aims to strengthen Polish industry production capabilities, stating Przydacz’s tweet was “a deliberate action to the detriment of our security.”
Sikorski Addresses SAFE Skepticism
Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski commented on the skepticism surrounding the SAFE program, referencing the principle of conditionality in European spending programs: “no stealing.” He expressed hope this was not the reason for the opposition’s skepticism about the program.
Sejm Approves SAFE Program Legislation
The Sejm adopted the bill implementing the SAFE program on February 13, with 236 deputies voting in favor, 199 against, and 4 abstaining. The legislation now requires the president’s signature to come into force. The SAFE program provides financial support to member states for defense industry investments through competitive long-term loans.
