Republican Senator Lindsey Graham influenced President Trump to order attacks on Iran, describing a ‘real fight’ to convince him.
Efforts to Persuade Trump
Discussions about attacking Iran began on a golf course following the 2024 elections, where Graham advised Trump on his second-term agenda. Graham pressured Trump to “blow something up” to combat drug trafficking and challenge tech giants, suggesting Trump leverage the agreement between Israel and US allies in the Middle East.
Graham’s Berlin Wall Analogy
Graham told Trump shortly before he took office that overthrowing Iran’s “terrorist regime” would be “an event on the scale of the fall of the Berlin Wall.” These discussions continued for months, including during a White House meeting less than 48 hours before the extensive US-Israel operation targeting the Iranian regime.
The ‘Real Fight’ for Military Action
Graham described a “real fight” to convince Trump to take military action and end the 47-year geopolitical rivalry. Outside of Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, few in the administration publicly supported attacking Iran. Graham frequently gave media interviews emphasizing the threat from Iran’s nuclear and missile programs.
“Let Israel do it alone or do little, Mr. President,” Graham urged Trump. “Do you want to have a role in this? Do you want them to know America will fight?”
Maduro’s Capture as Turning Point
The capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro in January proved to be a turning point, giving Trump “conviction to see it through.” When defending Trump against public skepticism, Graham noted that Iran’s future direction remained in the hands of the Iranian people.
“If they want to rebuild their country, build more nuclear weapons and missiles to strike, we will treat the new people the same way we treated the old ones,” Graham stated. “But I don’t believe that. I think they will find a way to become a different country.”
Goals of the US-Israel Operation
The Middle East war aims to implement a decapitation strategy – removing Iran’s leadership and limiting the current regime’s autonomy. During the first wave of Israeli airstrikes, former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and dozens of high-ranking officials were targeted. Trump also cited the cost of neutralizing Iranian missiles compared to their value as a goal.
