Greek Supreme Court Grants Extradition of Suspected Murderer for 16‑Year‑Old Mai

Greek Supreme Court approved extradition of Bartosz G. for the murder of 16‑year‑old Mai Mława, a decision made on December 5, 2023.

Breakthrough Verdict in the Murder of Mai Mława

On Friday, 5 December, the Greek Supreme Court agreed to extradite Bartosz G. to Poland. The teenager is suspected in the murder of 16‑year‑old Mai from Mława.

Judges found no basis for a European Arrest Warrant to be honored, according to family lawyer Wojciech Kasprzyk in an interview with portal o2.pl.

The court will prepare a written justification by 18 December; after that, Athens and Warsaw will discuss transport details, and the documents will be forwarded to the District Prosecutor’s Office in Płock.

Suspect Denied Iron‑Clad Letter

In late October, the court in Płock rejected the defense’s request for an iron‑clad letter for Bartosz G. Such a document could have allowed the teenager to avoid arrest and appear in court freely.

The prosecutor’s spokesman noted that issuance of the letter depends on the prosecutor’s decision, which was not granted. He cited the nature of the offence and case circumstances as reasons for the refusal.

Murder of 16‑Year‑Old Mai Mława

Mai Mława went missing on 23 April. Police determined she was scheduled to meet 17‑year‑old Bartosz G. that day.

The search concluded on 1 May. Police spokesperson Katarzyna Kucharska reported that the body was hidden in difficult-to-access foliage near railway tracks. Investigators suspect third parties contributed to her death.

Bartosz G., the primary suspect, left for a school trip to Greece. Law enforcement cooperated with Greek authorities, leading to his arrest there. An extradition approval was granted on 28 May, and the teen’s lawyers have filed an appeal.
