Greenland in Uncertainty: ‘We Are Preparing for Everything’

Greenland’s leaders signal cooperation with EU and NATO while clarifying no EU accession amid Arctic tensions.

Conference in Nuuk: Clear Signal Toward EU and NATO

During a press conference in Nuuk, Greenland’s government chairman Jens-Frederik Nielsen and former Prime Minister Mute B. Egede emphasized the importance of international cooperation amid changing geopolitical situations in the Arctic. Nielsen stated they maintain a “very good dialogue with EU” and seek to strengthen cooperation where beneficial.

Greenland Does Not Seek EU Membership

Former Prime Minister Mute B. Egede clarified that Nuuk does not consider accession to the European Union. “I must emphasize in the context of the EU that the goal is not admission, but cooperation that will benefit Greenland,” he stated.

Arctic Tensions: “We Must Be Prepared for Everything”

Egede addressed security and relations with the United States, calling for calm while acknowledging risks. “Nothing indicates the use of military force, but we must still be prepared for everything,” he said. While a military attack from the US is considered unlikely, no scenario can be excluded in the current geopolitical situation.

Controversial Working Group to Continue

Egede commented on a working group established during last week’s meeting in the US, which has faced controversy and pressure from Washington. “Dialogue must happen… even if we don’t agree,” he added, emphasizing they won’t simply submit and seek the best solution for all parties.

Broad Support in Denmark

Greenlandic issues were also discussed in Copenhagen. Following Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s conference, Danish parliamentarians signaled broad support for the government’s actions and response to the situation surrounding Greenland.
