Greenland in Uncertainty: ‘We Are Preparing for Everything’

Greenland’s leadership emphasizes preparedness amid geopolitical tensions while clarifying EU stance.

Conference in Nuuk: Clear Signal Toward EU and NATO

During a press conference in Nuuk, Greenland’s government chairman Jens-Frederik Nielsen and former Prime Minister Mute B. Egede emphasized the importance of international cooperation amid changing Arctic geopolitics. Nielsen stated Greenland is maintaining a good dialogue with the EU to strengthen cooperation where beneficial, while also seeing the need for close ties with Denmark, NATO, and key EU countries.

Greenland Clarifies Stance on EU Membership

Former Prime Minister Mute B. Egede explicitly stated that Greenland is not considering joining the European Union. “The goal is not accession, but cooperation that will benefit Greenland,” Egede clarified during the conference, emphasizing that Nuuk aims for beneficial partnerships rather than full membership.

Tensions Around the Arctic: “We Must Be Prepared for Everything”

Egede appealed to residents for calm regarding security concerns and relations with the United States, while not underestimating risks. “Nothing indicates military force will be used, but we must still be prepared for everything,” he stated. Although a US military attack is considered unlikely, Egede noted that no scenario can be ruled out in the current geopolitical climate.

Controversial Working Group to Continue

Egede addressed the controversial working group established during last week’s US meeting, which faced pressure from Washington. “There must be dialogue, even if we don’t agree,” the politician stated, adding that Greenland should not simply give up in seeking the best solution for all parties involved.

Wide Support in Denmark

Greenland-related issues were also discussed in Copenhagen, where a parallel conference was taking place. Following question time with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Danish parliamentarians signaled broad support for their government’s actions and response to the situation surrounding Greenland.
