Health Education Becomes Compulsory with Graded Impact on GPA

Minister of Education Barbara Nowacka has introduced a draft regulation making health education a mandatory, graded subject in schools, while establishing an optional new curriculum for sexual health.

New Mandatory Curriculum Requirements

Health education is officially set to become a mandatory subject in the school curriculum. Crucially, the grades earned in this course will be factored directly into students’ final grade point averages.

Introduction of Optional Sexual Health Studies

The draft regulation, published via the Government Legislation Center, also introduces a specific curriculum for sexual health. Unlike the general health education program, this subject will remain entirely optional for students.

Legal Basis and Implementation

The proposed changes modify the appendix to the Ministry of Education’s March 11, 2026, regulation regarding core curricula for preschool and primary education, including provisions for students with moderate or significant intellectual disabilities. The legal framework for these updates is derived from the Law on School Education.

Academic Updates for 2025/2026

These adjustments serve to update the existing core curriculum requirements. The regulation specifically outlines the transition from the previously non-mandatory health education framework to the new, graded, and compulsory structure effective for the upcoming school year.
