Heating Network Failure in Warsaw: City Opens Temporary Shelter

A heating network failure in Warsaw’s Ursus and Włoch districts has prompted the city to open temporary shelters and suspend classes at 12 educational facilities.

School Closures and Childcare

On February 5th, 12 educational facilities in Warsaw suspended classes, with 11 located in the Ursus district. According to the Education Bureau, affected schools will provide childcare for preschool and primary school students. However, SP nr 409, which has independent heating, remains operational.

Emergency Measures

The city has opened a temporary shelter at OSR przy ul. Gładkiej 16, available to residents of both affected districts starting at 18:00. The shelter provides beds, water, hot tea, and sanitation. An emergency hotline (510 205 806) is available until 22:00, and city guard (986) can provide transportation.

Repair Operations

The heating network operator, Veolia, faces a more serious failure than initially assessed. The main issue is a 600mm supply pipe requiring a longer replacement than originally planned, with an additional return pipe section also needing replacement. Two technical teams are working continuously on repairs.

City Response

City authorities maintain constant contact with Veolia and coordinate emergency services. Heat supply is expected to resume on February 5th at 6:00 AM. District offices monitor residents for potential difficulties, while social assistance centers check if their clients require support.

Current Situation

Despite the nearly 12-hour heating outage, temperatures in many thermomodernized buildings in Ursus remain above 20°C. The city’s emergency center remains on standby as authorities work to restore normal operations.

Regulatory Requirements

School regulations mandate safe and hygienic conditions including proper heating, with specific minimum temperature requirements for educational facilities.
