Lebanon: Israel Suffers Tank Losses
Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Lebanese paramilitary group, conducted multiple ambushes against Israeli forces in southern Lebanon on Tuesday and Thursday. These attacks resulted in the destruction of 18 Israeli Merkava main battle tanks and two remotely operated D9 bulldozers.
Recent Losses Mirror Past Conflicts
The scale of these tank losses is the most significant Israel has experienced since the early 1980s, during the first phase of the Lebanon War. At that time, Merkava and older US-supplied tanks clashed with newly deployed Syrian T-72 tanks.
Escalation Following Attacks on Iran
Following the commencement of a joint Israeli-American attack on Iran on February 28th, Hezbollah opened a second front against Israel, prompting an Israeli military response in southern Lebanon. Prior to this, Merkava tanks had already sustained losses during Israeli operations against Palestinian paramilitary groups in the Gaza Strip since late 2023, though those losses were less substantial.
Humanitarian Crisis in Lebanon Deepens
The number of people killed since the start of Israel’s aggression against Lebanon has risen to 1,116, according to data released Thursday by the Lebanese Ministry of Health. These figures have been tallied since March 2nd, when Israel initiated a wave of attacks aimed at dismantling Hezbollah.
International organizations estimate that over 1 million residents of Lebanon have been displaced due to the conflict. Approximately 150,000 people in southern Lebanon have been cut off from the rest of the country following the destruction of bridges over the Litani River by the Israeli army.
Impact on Children and Women
UNICEF representative in Lebanon, Marcoluigi Corsi, reported Friday that over 370,000 children have been forced to leave their homes in Lebanon due to the ongoing Israeli offensive against Hezbollah. He added that 121 children have been killed and 399 injured as a result. Around 20% of Lebanon’s population has been displaced, and 25% of women have been forced to leave their homes, according to UN Women.
