High-Speed Train Collision in Spain Leaves Multiple Dead, Dozens Injured

At least seven people were killed and dozens injured in Spain when a high-speed train derailed and collided with another train near Adamuz on January 18.

A high-speed train traveling from Málaga to Puerta de Atocha derailed at a switch near Adamuz and collided with a second train traveling from Puerta de Atocha to Huelva on the evening of Sunday, January 18. Emergency services are working to free trapped passengers at the scene.

Fatalities and Injuries

One of the trains was carrying 317 passengers. At least seven people were killed and dozens injured according to the Guardia Civil, as reported by the EFE news agency.

Passenger Describes Impact

Journalist Salvador Jiménez, who was on one of the trains, described the impact feeling like “an earthquake.” He reported that the crew used emergency hammers to open doors and windows, allowing passengers to evacuate. One carriage was described as having “completely overturned.”

Suspended Train Service

Due to the accident, train service between Madrid and Andalusia has been suspended. Trains in transit have been returned to their original stations. Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente went to Madrid’s Atocha station, where crisis management is being coordinated.
