Hit-and-run at crosswalk: Drunk driver apprehended by witness

On Thursday evening in Żyrardów, a pedestrian was struck at a crosswalk by a fleeing drunk driver who was later apprehended by a witness.

The Incident

On Thursday, January 15, 2026 at approximately 7:55 PM on Jaktorowska Street in Żyrardów, a pedestrian was hit at a marked crosswalk. The perpetrator left the scene, however – as reported by a witness – was caught a few kilometers away and handed over to police.

Witness Account

“The driver began to flee. A car following the perpetrator (the witness) gave chase. He caught him a few kilometers away and delivered him to the police. The driver turned out to be a man under the influence of alcohol.” – the event witness told us.

Police Confirmation

We confirmed information about the incident with the Żyrardów District Police Headquarters. The injured 18-year-old Ukrainian citizen was taken to the hospital.

Driver Details and Legal Proceedings

According to findings, the Nissan was driven by a 45-year-old Polish citizen. A breathalyzer test showed over 2.7 per mille of alcohol in his exhaled air. The man had a driver’s license, which was seized from him yesterday. Further procedural activities are to be conducted after the Nissan driver sobers up.
