Hołowni Eyes UN High Commissioner Post While Poland 2050 Looks to Him

In late September, Szymon Hołowni announced he intends to apply for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees role while Polish 2050 considers him as a potential party leader, sparking political speculation.

Hołowni’s Future Career

In a TVN24 podcast, journalists discussed Hołowni’s next steps. Agata Adamek noted that unofficial reports suggest the politician stands little chance of becoming the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Hołowni said in late September that he plans to apply for the position.

Tethers to the Commissioner

Mai Wójcikowska observes that the governing coalition believes Hołowni will remain in Poland and could seek leadership of the Poland 2050 party. Other party figures claim that he has regained his “political spark.” Konrad Piasecki echoed that the speculation is growing that he might continue as Poland 2050 leader.

Candidates for Poland 2050 Leadership

Onet reports that Hołowni may run for the party’s leadership, a possibility not ruled out by former Sejm Marshal during an internal meeting. The deadline for submitting candidacies is December 10. So far declared candidates include Katarzyna Pełczyńska‑Nałęcz, Paulina Hennig‑Kloska, Joanna Mucha, Michał Kobosko, and Ryszard Petru. Hołowni’s decision depends on the outcome of his UN application.

Details

Recent media coverage places Hołowni among a short list of three candidates for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Rzeczpospolita reported that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs funds his overseas visits to seek support for his candidacy. In recent weeks, speculation arose that he might become an ambassador, e.g., to the United States, but government officials dismiss the scenario. The term of current UN High Commissioner Philip Grandier expires in December.
