Polish politician Szymon Hołownia has condemned a journalist for publishing an article claiming he suffers from depression, which he denies.
Jacek Nizinkiewicz Claims Hołownia Suffers from Depression
Jacek Nizinkiewicz published an article in “Rzeczpospolita” in which he “revealed” that Szymon Hołownia has been struggling with depression for many months. From several independent sources, Nizinkiewicz claimed Hołownia has been undergoing treatment for months, leading to limited media activity and minimal public appearances. The article also mentioned other politicians who reportedly treated for depression: Jarosław Gowin, Jarosław Kaczyński, Donald Tusk, and Andrzej Leppera.
Hołownia Denies Depression Diagnosis
In a statement, Szymon Hołownia wrote that he did not consent to the public disclosure of information about his health and called Nizinkiewicz’s actions “violent” and “vile.” Hołownia admitted that after Karol Nawrocki’s presidential inauguration and meetings with Jarosław Kaczyński, he and his family experienced “a wave of hatred” that affected his health. He emphasized that patients should always control their own health information.
Hołownia: “I Don’t Have Depression, I’m Struggling with Other Challenges”
The politician directly addressed Nizinkiewicz, saying “And no, I don’t have depression, I’m struggling with other challenges.” Hołownia stated he is on the right track with medication working and regaining his strength. He emphasized that no one has the right to take away patients’ dignity, steal their privacy, or bombard them with questions, adding that everyone has the right to seek treatment in their own way.
Supreme Medical Chamber Regrets Publication
The Supreme Medical Chamber expressed its outrage over the article, stating that such action should never take place and health information should remain under special protection. The Chamber regretted that the disclosure happened on World Depression Day, which should focus on health education rather than publishing sensitive health data. NIL appealed to media for sensitivity and to authorities to explain how such data was leaked.
Nizinkiewicz Expected Different Reaction
In an interview with Wirtualne Media, Nizinkiewicz said he did not expect an “attack” and thought Hołownia would “react more positively.” The journalist explained he repeatedly tried to contact the politician without response. Nizinkiewicz claimed his article was neither aggressive nor revealing, as Hołownia’s closest collaborators were already discussing his health issues. He stated he was trying to present the issue with empathy rather than negativity.
