Emergency services rescued a 40-year-old homeless man from hypothermia after he called 986 warning he would die soon.
Dramatic Morning Call
Around 6:00 AM on Tuesday, February 3, a 40-year-old man in a homelessness crisis called the 986 emergency number, warning he was freezing and would die soon. The operator dispatched a patrol from the VII District who knew the man and his location.
Previous Refusal
The night before, around 1:20 AM, guards had tried to convince the man to leave an abandoned shed for a shelter but he refused. When the call came in, Senior Inspector Elżbieta Banaszek knew immediate action was needed despite the shed being still warm at that time.
Rapid Response
Within minutes, guards with sirens arrived at the known address. Senior Inspector Mariusz Dróżdż brought rescue equipment while his partner carried a defibrillator. Upon entering the shed, they found Mr. Grzegorz huddled, with frost on the walls and icy hands.
Life-Saving Measures
The man was blue in the face and explained he feared going out into the cold to build a fire. Guards covered him with whatever they could, called an ambulance, and lit a fire to warm him while waiting for paramedics. His skin color visibly improved as they waited.
