Polish border guards uncovered a massive tunnel beneath the Polish‑Belarusian frontier near Narewka, arresting more than 130 migrants and searching for the rest.
Tunnel Specs and Discovery
A 50‑meter-long underground tunnel cutting through a barrier and a technical road was uncovered yesterday near Narewka in Podlasie, the authorities say. The passage was about 1.5 m high, with its hidden forest entrance roughly 50 m on the Belarus side of the border and its exit about 10 m from the Polish side’s dam.
Rapid Response Seizures
Using electronic monitoring, Polish Border Guard officers quickly learned that more than 180 migrants had slipped through the tunnel in a very short time. In the ensuing operation, they detained over 130 people—mostly Afghans and Pakistanis, with the rest including Indians, Nepalese, and Bangladeshis. Police, soldiers, and even dogs were employed in the raid, and investigators are still looking for the remaining illegal border crossers.
Drivers Intercepted
At the same time, the Border Guard arrested two drivers—a 69‑year‑old Polish resident from Małopolska and a 49‑year‑old Lithuanian citizen—after they drove into the area to pick up migrants. Authorities say the men intended to move the foreigners westward across Europe, and further legal actions are underway.
Fourth Tunnel Alert
This incident marks the fourth tunnel discovered by the Podlaskie Border Guard Division along the Polish‑Belarusian line this year. Physical and electronic safeguards across this segment enable swift response to any breach attempts.
