Hungarian Opposition Widens Lead Over Orbán’s Party in New Polls

Hungarian opposition party TISZA leads Fidesz by 20 points among decided voters, according to new polls for April elections.

Election Date and Orbán’s Claim

Hungarian elections are scheduled for April 12. Prime Minister Viktor Orban continues to assert that his party can maintain power, though his opponents dispute this assertion.

Political opponents of Fidesz claim that Orban relies on polls conducted by institutions linked to his party while ignoring the results of independent research.

Latest Poll Results

In a poll conducted by Median polling firm from February 18-23 for the weekly magazine “HVG,” 42 percent of respondents declared support for the TISZA party, an increase of 2 percentage points from the previous month’s survey.

Fidesz received 31 percent support in the same poll, a decrease of 2 percentage points. Besides these two largest center-right parties, the far-right Movement of Our Homeland, which received 5 percent support, could also enter parliament.

Decided Voters Show Larger Lead

Among voters who are certain of their choice for the April elections, the opposition’s lead is even more substantial. In this group, TISZA holds a 20-point lead over Fidesz, with 55 percent support compared to 35 percent. In January, this advantage was only 12 percentage points in favor of the opposition.

January Poll Data

As reported earlier by Gazeta.pl, other polls also show the opposition’s growing lead over Fidesz. In January, the Minerwa Institute research center published a poll showing TISZA with 40.9 percent support. Fidesz was supported by 27.6 percent of respondents at that time.

The January poll, conducted between January 19-22 on a group of 1,115 people, showed a record 83 percent of respondents declaring their intention to participate in the voting.
