Hungary: Opposition Claims Victory as Over Half of Votes Tallied

With over half of the votes counted in Hungary’s parliamentary elections, opposition leader Péter Magyar claims victory after receiving congratulations from Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Partial Results Show Opposition Lead

Over half of the votes have been tallied in Hungary’s parliamentary elections, with projections indicating a lead for the opposition. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has reportedly congratulated opposition leader Péter Magyar on the apparent victory.

Current projections, including votes from national lists and single-member constituencies, suggest 136 seats for Tisza, 56 for Fidesz and KDNP, and 7 for Mi Hazánk, according to the National Election Office (NVI) after counting 60.24% of the votes.

Voter Turnout and Election Details

By 6:30 PM, 77.8% of eligible voters had cast their ballots, totaling 5,856,515 individuals. Vote counting began immediately after polling stations closed at 7:00 PM.

Hungarians elected 199 deputies to the National Assembly (Orszaggyules), a unicameral parliament. 106 are elected in single-member districts, and 93 from national lists. The candidate with the most votes wins each district, even without a majority.

Orbán’s Congratulations

Opposition party leader Péter Magyar announced on Facebook Sunday evening that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán had congratulated him on the victory in the parliamentary elections.

“Just now, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán called and congratulated us on our victory,” Magyar wrote shortly after 9:00 PM, when the National Election Office (NVI) announced partial results after counting over 53% of the votes.

Current Seat Projections

Currently, Tisza is projected to secure 136 seats in the 199-member parliament, while Fidesz is expected to win 56. The far-right Our Homeland Movement may gain 7 seats.

A constitutional majority requires 133 seats.
