A recount has been initiated in Keszthely, Hungary, after the TISZA party secured a likely constitutional majority in the recent parliamentary elections by a narrow margin.
TISZA Secures Potential Constitutional Majority
According to partial results, with 98.25% of votes counted, TISZA, led by Péter Magyar, is projected to win 136 seats in the 199-seat Hungarian parliament, likely achieving a constitutional majority requiring 133 seats.
The National Election Office plans to finalize the count of all votes by Saturday, April 18th.
Close Result Triggers Recount
Hungarian law allows candidates who lose by 100 votes or less to request a recount without providing justification. The recount in Keszthely is expected to conclude on Wednesday, April 15th, with a difference of only 59 votes.
Fidesz-KNDP and Mi Hazank to Enter Parliament
Current forecasts indicate the Fidesz-KNDP coalition will receive 57 seats in parliament. The far-right Our Homeland Movement (Mi Hazank) is also expected to gain representation, potentially securing six seats.
Péter Magyar Declares Victory
Péter Magyar stated, “We did it. TISZA and Hungary won the election. And not barely, but very. Very, very much. Together we liberated Hungary.” He emphasized that TISZA has received unprecedented support, with approximately 3.3 million votes.
International Reactions and Polish Solidarity
Donald Tusk congratulated Péter Magyar on the victory and discussed a potential visit to Warsaw, noting the strong relationship between Poland and Hungary. He expressed his sentiment on X, stating, “Hungary, Poland, Europe together again! Great victory, dear friends! Ruszkik haza!” (“Ruszkik haza” means “Russians go home” in Hungarian).
Karol Nawrocki, emphasized the importance of the 1000-year-old Polish-Hungarian friendship, stating it transcends parliamentary elections.
