Record Turnout Reported
As of 1 PM on Sunday, voter turnout in Hungary’s parliamentary elections reached 54.14%, according to data from the National Election Office (NVI).
A total of 4,075,272 people had already participated in the elections. In 2018, turnout by 1 PM was 42.32%, and in 2022, it was 40.01%.
Registered Voters and Absentee Ballots
The NVI reported that 7,527,742 people are registered to vote in these elections. This year saw a record number of individuals registering to vote from abroad—over 90,000—and a record number of absentee ballots cast, nearing 224,000.
Parliamentary Election Details
Hungarians are electing 199 deputies to the National Assembly, Hungary’s unicameral parliament. 106 are elected in single-member constituencies, while the remaining 93 are chosen from national party lists.
In each constituency, the candidate with the most votes wins, even without a majority.
Voting Rights
Eligible Hungarian citizens voting within the country have the right to cast two votes: one for a candidate in their single-member constituency and another for a party list or national minority list.
Voters abroad cast only one vote, exclusively for a national party list.
Key Figures Have Voted
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Tisza Party Chairman Péter Magyar, and President of Hungary Tamás Sulyok have already cast their votes.
Orbán’s Statement on Turnout
“Many people are voting. This means one thing: if we want to protect Hungary’s security, no patriot can stay home! Only Fidesz! Upwards, to victory!” Orbán wrote on Facebook, commenting on the voter turnout at 11 AM.
Vote Counting and Preliminary Results
Vote counting will begin immediately after polling stations close at 7 PM, with preliminary results—including the percentage of votes tallied—expected to be published around 8 PM.
